May 2015 – Saturday May 16th Monthly Meeting at CFSA – Public Speaking

Our students were greeted at the CFSA building with a wonderful breakfast treat and lots of catching up together. We circled up to talk about our collaboration and to study for our vocabulary quiz. Immediately following this review, we were graced with a powerful and fun public speaking workshop run by several representatives from Deloitte. Deloitte is a major international accounting and consulting firm. “Deloitte” is the brand under which tens of thousands of dedicated professionals in independent firms throughout the world collaborate to provide audit, consulting, financial advisory, risk management, tax and related services to select clients.
Our speakers focused on honing our speaking skills, targeting areas such as effective storytelling, argument, stance, gestures, eye contact and confidence. We watched relevant video clips of outstanding public speakers as well as watching speeches that were hilarious in their failure to communicate appropriately.

After lunch, students outlined 2 minute speeches in groups, then with a partner or mentor. They practiced their speeches and gave peer feedback. Once the students felt confident, they recorded their speeches with a partner and watched it back for further analysis. The group wrapped up the activity by giving feedback about the workshop in a large group circle. Serendipitously, three of our students were invited next door to share their thoughts about foster care with a group who were training new potential foster parents. They each gave a 2 minute speech on why it is a good idea to foster a teenager in foster care. We were all so proud of them, we had tears in our eyes!

We are proud of all of our students, including how the students cleaned up and prepared for dismissal for the day. As always, our scholars left with enthusiasm for all the new skills they are experiencing as young adults. They are learning to speak to the world with confidence and wisdom. The future will be safe in their hands!
