All of our students, families, social workers, volunteers and other individuals involved with our First Star Greater Washington Academy were invited to our Information Session and BBQ lunch on Saturday, June 6th at the Child and Family Services Agency building in DC.

Students, parents, social workers and care givers arrived at 9:30 a.m. and shared social time over breakfast before beginning the program. Students turned in their laptops to be refurbished and returned in full working order on July 5th at the start of the program.

Parents stayed in the conference room for an information session that went over the summer academy logistics, courses, expectations, and questions, in addition to receiving support as they filled out the permission packets.

Students and mentors alike participated in 2 icebreaker activities. First they divided up into groups based on their birthday. Then, the started the first activity, 2 truths and a lie. The kids loved two truths and a lie. Every single person shared with the group. They were engaged and excited.

In the second activity, the youths made webs about pivotal points in their lives/characteristics/facts and then shared with the whole group.  The web allowed them to share some unique facts that others may not have known about them.

Following the activities, everyone lined up for a delicious barbeque lunch catered by Red, Hot and Blue.  The afternoon gave all of us a chance to talk and laugh together and make our plans for a fabulous time in July at The George Washington University!
