Push grows to include voices of Nebraska children in welfare hearings

LINCOLN — The courtroom can get crowded at a typical child welfare hearing.
There's the judge, the court staff, the county attorney, the case manager, one or both parents, attorneys for the parents, the child's guardian ad litem, potentially the court-appointed special advocate volunteer, the foster parents and a therapist or other service provider.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - In the wake of Colton Turner's death, (his mother Meagan Work and her boyfriend are in jail facing criminal charges) those at Texas' Child Protection Services Division this week admitted - in the words of an agency spokesperson ‘severe mistakes in judgment.' Three investigations staff lost their jobs including a Program Director and a new round of soul-searching began. Now, a three-month old operational review aimed at restructuring CPS from the inside-out is taking on new relevance.

The Invisible Achievement Gap: Students in Foster Care

Across the country it's back to school time. I hope it is a year full of promise and not disappointment and added stress for all children -- especially those most vulnerable. I also hope this school year begins with a renewed commitment by all teachers and school administrators to help every child succeed. Every year too many children don't get the respect and extra help they need to reach their full potential. Children of color, poor children, English learners, and children with disabilities are especially likely to be left behind. And there is another group of children -- those in foster care -- whose special needs too often are ignored.
