First Star Scholar Advisory Committee (SAC)

The First Star Scholar Advisory Committee is dedicated to uplifting student’s voices and enacting change in the foster care system.

First Star encourages advocacy and engagement in social justice through the Scholar Advisory Committee (SAC). SAC is composed of current scholars from across the First Star Academy network and from the Alumni Program. SAC gives scholars the opportunity to be engaged nationally, freely share their ideas and opinions, and to dialogue about issues that are important to them!

SAC Learning Goals and Outcomes

Develop self-identified leadership style and advocate on behalf of First Star scholar experience
Cultivate intellectual and personal optimism through self-exploration and long-term planning
Provide soft skills and leadership training and tools applicable to college and career readiness
Develop and apply critical thinking through the lens of creative media (podcasting), journalism (magazine), advocacy (civic engagement opportunities)

SAC Creation Process

Student Leaders

SAC is comprised of current FS scholars and alumni who are actively participating in Academy or Alumni Programming and willing to meet regularly virtually throughout the spring (all grade levels are welcome).

Creative Work

Student Leaders host the Scholars Voice Podcast Series, a community space dedicated to scholar voice and developing solutions. This year, they created a three-episode mini-series on topics such as Imposter Syndrome, Fostering Youth Identity, and Self-Discovery.

Expressive Artwork

In addition to the podcast mini-series, student leaders also received journals as a part of a writing project used to help them develop positive avenues for self-expression. They were asked to select the excerpts or poems that they were comfortable sharing.

Scholar Voices Podcast

The Scholars Advisory Council is hosting the Scholar Voice Podcast Series, a community space dedicated to scholar voice and developing solutions. In collaboration with participating Alumni, and scholars from across our Academies we have developed a platform for scholars to engage in conversation and share their experiences in hopes of finding solutions to the challenges they experience as youth in care.
