Two national groups focused on helping abused and neglected children released a report today rating Massachusetts as one of the best states in the country for protecting the legal rights of such children.
Massachusetts was among three states that were awarded an A+ rating by First Star and the Children’s Advocacy Institute at the University of San Diego School of Law. The two other states were Connecticut and Oklahoma.
Twelve states earned A’s, 11 received B’s, and 25 states were given C’s or lower.

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote today on the reconciliation package to its fiscal year 2013 budget that would
cut an additional tens of billions of dollars more in investments in the country’s children. The package was cleared for the floor after a Monday vote in the House Committee on the Budget passed the measure 21-9 along party lines.

UC Riverside Psychologist Tuppett Yates has received a $350,000 grant from the William T. Grant Foundation to study the behavior of emancipated youth from foster care. As part of a five-year study, Yates will examine the impact of recent legislation (Assembly Bill 12) which increased the eligible foster care age from 18 to 21, along with the communication styles of social workers.
