Increasing Access to Higher Education

August 22, 2013
This summer, 26 foster youth going into 9th and 10th grade will spend four weeks living in dormitories at George Washington University as part of a year-long effort to expose them to — and prepare them for — college life. The students will take a two-credit college-level film reporting class and receive academic enrichment and remediation programs, said Teresa Zutter, director of First Star Greater Washington Academy, one of four Foster Youth Academies run by the national nonprofit First Star. Students will also participate in field trips, cultural events, a speakers' forum and other activities designed to give them the enrichment and encouragement they need to ultimately be accepted into and graduate from two- and four-year college programs.

September 6, 2013
Editor's note: In the Human Factor, we profile survivors who have overcome the odds. Confronting a life obstacle -- injury, illness or other hardship -- they tapped their inner strength and found resilience they didn't know they possessed. This week we meet college junior Thomas McRae, who grew up in 22 different households, half of them foster homes.

Nursing professor receives funding to better estimate child fatalities due to abuse and neglect

August 22, 2013
Approximately 1,700 children die of maltreatment every year in the United States, according to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System; however, researchers estimate that the actual number of child fatalities due to abuse and neglect is nearly double that number. During a 13-month health policy fellowship at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), an MU nursing researcher will investigate better ways to identify child maltreatment deaths on death certificates then use this data to estimate a more accurate number of child fatalities due to abuse and neglect nationally.
