Childhood abuse raises drug users’ suicide risk

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — For health professionals, the message from a new study in the American Journal of Public Health is clear: Asking patients about a history of childhood abuse can directly help assess their risk of attempting suicide. The evidence, authors say, shows that childhood abuse can have life-and-death consequences for the rest of a person's life.

DURING the Great Recession, child abuse and neglect appeared to decline. Incidents reported to local authorities dropped. “The doom-and-gloom predictions haven't come true,” Richard Gelles, a child-welfare expert at the University of Pennsylvania, told The Associated Press in 2011.

Despite drop in number of foster youth, significant educational obstacles remain

Children's advocates are welcoming a new report showing a sharp drop in the number of foster youth in California, but also caution that less isn't necessarily a sign of improvement. This is especially the case in education, where most schools still have not figured out how to help foster youth succeed academically.

First-time lobbyists enjoy rare legislative win with Oregon Foster Children’s Bill of Rights

SALEM -- Few first-time lobbyists receive unanimous support for their bill, but a group of current and former foster children won that distinction Wednesday when the House unanimously approved the Oregon Foster Children's Bill of Rights.
